Advocacy is the very ordinary process of standing up for the rights of people who are being treated unfairly. Ordinary people do it in all walks of life, quite often without giving the matter a second thought.
Citizen Advocacy invites the involvement of ordinary member of our community into the lives of people with developmental and related disabilities.
A Citizen Advocate :
- Believes and reminds others that all people have the same needs and feelings.
- Gives the person someone they can trust to value their opinions and contributions to the community.
- Shows others that individuals with disabilities are more like other people than they are different.
- Makes sure that people are included in real work, real living situations, and a real part of community life.
- Supports everyone’s need for choice, dignity, and the opportunity to make real decisions.
- Makes a long term commitment to sharing life.
